Description
It is black duck-like waterbird with a long tail and short, thick neck. The bill is sharply hooked at the tip. Sexes alike.

Distribution
It is a resident of Indian Union, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Srilanka and Myanmar.

Food
Fish, tadpoles are its main food.

Habits
It can be spotted drying its outstretched wings near village ponds. Being an expert diver and swimmer it hunts its food under the water.

Nesting
Nest is similar to crow’s nest। It is created in shallow twig platform in the colonies of other water-birds like egrets, storks etc. It lays 4 or 5 pale bluish green eggs.
বিবরণ
কালো রঙের লম্বা লেজ, ছোট মোটা গ্রীবাযুক্ত হাঁসের মতো জলচর পাখি। চঞ্চুর সামনের দিকে হুকের মতো বাঁকা হয়। স্ত্রী ও পুরুষ পাখি একই রকমের দেখতে হয়।

বিস্তার
পুরো ভারতবর্ষে, বাংলাদেশ, পাকিস্তান, শ্রীলঙ্কা ও মায়ানমারে দেখা যায়।

খাদ্য
মাছ ও ব্যাঙাচি এর প্রধান খাদ্য।

স্বভাব
একে জলাশয়ের কাছে ডানা শুকোতে দেখা যায়। দক্ষ সাঁতারু হিসেবে জলের নীচে সাঁতার কেটে শিকার ধরে।

বাসস্থান
কাকের বাসার মত বাসা বানায়। বক বা সারস জাতীয় প্রাণীর বাসস্থানে গাছের ডালে বাসা বানায়। চার থেকে পাঁচটা নীলচে সবুজ রঙের ডিম দেয়।
